Anti-protest skit in NSO program removed following 'student power' demonstration
Last Tuesday, demonstrators affiliated with Build Up Resistance Now (B.U.R.N.) took to the Busch Student Center during New Student Orientation (NSO) with chants, noisemakers and a sign reading "Rutgers can't stop student power" in response to a protest-related exercise introduced during this year's orientation programming.

'This marks strike one': Pro-Palestinian student groups react to investments committee chair no-show
The May 2 agreement ending the four-day encampment on campus last semester included a commitment from University President Jonathan Holloway and Chair of the Joint Committee on Investments (JCOI) Gary Chropuvka to meet with a group of student organizers: a commitment purportedly left unmet after Chropuvka withdrew from a meeting with the group hours before its scheduled time earlier this week.

Rutgers students join nationwide encampment movement with march, tents in Voorhees Mall
The Students for Justice in Palestine at Rutgers—New Brunswick (SJP) and Rutgers Endowment Justice Collective (EJC) commenced an encampment on Voorhees Mall on the College Avenue campus on Monday, following in the steps of peers at other Northeastern campuses such as Princeton University and Yale University.

U. suspends New Brunswick chapter of SJP, citing code of conduct violations
The University has suspended Students for Justice in Palestine at Rutgers—New Brunswick (SJP), citing multiple infractions of the University Code of Student Conduct, according to a statement from a University spokesperson.
​
"The policies grant the authority to suspend a student organization's activities when the University determines that there is a reasonable basis to conclude that the continued activities by the student organization pose a substantial and immediate threat to the safety and well-being of others, or the suspension of organizational activities is needed to maintain preservation of the University," the statement read.

SJP announces reinstatement, discusses experience with appeal process
On Wednesday, Students for Justice in Palestine at Rutgers—New Brunswick (SJP) announced its reinstatement after being suspended last month, according to statements from the organization and the University.
​
Though the organization has been allowed back on campus, it will remain under probation until the end of the calendar year, said its representatives at a press conference in the Graduate Student Lounge attached to the College Avenue Student Center on Wednesday.

Newark, Camden campuses pass divestment vote, New Brunswick anticipates results
The Rutgers University Student Assembly is expected to release the results of its divestment-related referendum vote on Tuesday, according to a post from the Rutgers Endowment Justice Collective (EJC) last week.
​
Similar referendum votes were open to student bodies at Rutgers—Newark and Rutgers—Camden, as previously reported by the Targum. While both of their voting periods opened later than that at Rutgers—New Brunswick, results have already been released.

RUSA passes bill about Islamophobia, amends, tables bill about anti-Palestinian behavior
Last week, the Rutgers University Student Assembly deliberated two bills, "Defining and Combating Islamophobia Act of 2024" and "A Resolution to Counteract Anti-Palestinian Racism."
​
The bill comes in the wake of a recent break-in and vandalism of the Center for Islamic Life at Rutgers University (CILRU) on the Islamic holiday Eid al-Fitr, as previously reported by The Daily Targum. According to Amjad, the destruction of a safe space for Muslim students on campus and instances similar to this one are why his proposal is so pertinent.

Human Rights Watch's Israel and Palestine director Omar Shakir speaks at Rutgers—Newark event
On February 29, the Rutgers Law Students for Justice in Palestine and the Center for Security Race and Rights at Rutgers—Newark, alongside other partners, hosted a talk with Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch (HRW).

The event was focused on defining apartheid and human rights violations in the context of the Israel-Hamas war.

U. student lobbies for state sanctions against Azerbaijan in exchange for detained former Rutgers researcher
Emin Bayramli, a School of Arts and Sciences senior, has drafted a potential state law forbidding New Jersey from entertaining commercial prospects with the country of Azerbaijan until his father, former Rutgers postdoctoral professor Gubad Ibadoghlu, is released from Azeri detention.
The Targum spoke with Bayramli and representatives of the Armenian Organized Resistance (ARMOR) to discuss the origin of Bayramli's bill, denoted bill S1642, the future steps for its passage and its implications for Azeri–American relations.
